Butte Bergeyre

Few people are aware about this corner of Paris. It’s neighbour to the Parc des Buttes Chaumont (see previous post). It’s a “butte” (hillock) which was not incorporated in the park, called Butte Bergeyre.

Just after WWI this area got a stadium; Stade Bergeyre, which could hold some 15 thousand people and which was used for rugby (Bergeyre was a rugby player) and soccer games. It was used for several soccer games during the Summer Olympics in 1924.
The stadium was demolished soon after the Olympic Games; Paris needed space for housing. Today, it’s a very calm area, more or less like a village; only one winding street and some stairs lead to the top. Although, or perhaps because, it’s not a visited area, some well-known people seem to have found their addresses up here.
There is a community garden, with a nice view (better in better weather) over Montmartre. (We can see the Sacré Coeur in the horizon also on the soccer photo.) Such “community gardens” can now be found all over Paris. It allows volunteers to plant and enjoy gardening on ground mostly belonging to the City of Paris, as long as the space is not used for other purposes.
Furthermore, on the slope is a modest vineyard, one of the maybe ten inside Paris. The most famous may be the one at Montmartre, other ones can be found in the Parc de Bercy, Parc Georges Brassens, Parc de Belleville

Peter, I love how you take us exploring places I would never have known existed. I especially love how you get us 'up close and personal' with some of these images. Fantastic!

Wow! This surely is a very very interesting place to live in, considering the tranquility and of course the beauty that surrounds it!

WOW this area is really another small village within Paris. I have never been here, but it will go on my "next time" list for sure. I love to explore Paris and get away from the tourist tracks, lol :o)

Love how you captured the cat and mouse. Most of us would have missed that.

Yes, I've never heard of this area.
I wonder what the wine from those vines taste like....?

Your photos turned out great, Peter! I am glad to see the new camera did its work. :) I was just looking at the photos I took, too, trying to decide which ones to post about, eventually.

Thank you for more history on the area, and I'm so glad that we had a chance to check out this hidden place in Paris.

Be well!
Karin

Another secret neighbourhood of Paris, brought to our attention by Peter. It must be very peaceful to live in this area.
Now I'm going back to the photos to find the cat and mouse.

I have never heard of this part of Paris. Your pictures are charming; it is hard to believe that such places with gardens are in the dynamic city of Paris. Thanks for telling us about it and with such lovely photographs too.
